Hunts & Peterborough Cup Finals - 12th May 2018

Last gasp tackle on Aiden Jordan

The St Neots Saints squad put in a courageous effort in the Hunts & Peterborough Cup Final against a very tough Peterborough team, and they would have snatched it the end if not for a last gasp tap-tackle that brought Saints flanker Aiden Jordan down, with no defenders left to beat, between himself and the Peterborough goal-line.

Peterborough opened the scoring with a blindside move following a scrum, but Saints rallied and came back strong. Centre Lewis Hall kicked two penalties following two line breaking runs deep into the Peterborough half by Fly-half Joe Woodgate.

Strong carries by Saints big three, Rhod Howcroft, Ross Hubbard and Nick Ashford again went close before Peterborough conceded another penalty inside their 22, but this time scrum-half Dan Hill took a quick tap and quick hands by Woodgate put Hall through a gap to dive over and score Saints first try of the game.

From the restart Aiden Jorden collected the ball and went on another run and carried deep into Peterborough territory, controlled phases of play by the forwards crept towards the try-line before skipper Ross Hubbard picked up from the base of a ruck and used all of his height and reach to stretch for the line and touch down. With another Hall conversion Saints went into the break leading 20 - 5.

Even with Saints in the accendency, Peterborough changes at half-time swung the game in their favour with a new back line that at times had too much pace for the Saints defenders. Despite some extraordinary defence from the Saints players and huge tackles from the Hayward brothers Jack and Adam, Saints were unable to stop the Peterborough backs scoring three quick tries to take the lead and then another to extend their lead.

Two more Hall penalties closed the gap to just 5 points and with the last play of the game Saints flanker Aiden Jordan caught the ball in his own 22 and with an open field in front of him he dodged and beat tacklers until he was away and a last minute win looked a certainty, until a last-gasp finger-tip tap-tackle by the Peterborough fly half brought Jordan down and the Peterborough team was able to rally and see out the game and a very narrow win.
