Saints Start Their Progress

St Neots 1st XV vs Northampton BBOB – 28th September 2019

St Neots welcomed newly promoted Northampton BBOB to the common for a close fought contest. The visitors kicked off the match with clear intentions for the first half, windy conditions saw BBOB kick straight away from the first whistle in an attempt to control Saints own territory. Saints looked to orchestrate a numbers of phases to take control of possession however the visitors capitalised on the wind and some lack of concentration at the back with the boot to sneak behind the defence for the first score.

Saints quickly responded on the restart, pressured line speed saw the kick off bounce into home hands for the forwards to accelerate into BBOB's 22m. From here St Neots used minimal phases finding no.8 Aiden Jordan stepping his way through tackle attempts to score.

Each side laid claim to extending their lead, but it was again the visitors who made use of the wind and field position to gain two further scores making it 7-17 at half time.

After some clear instructions from the sideline, Saints begun the second half more brightly, taking control of possession and territory to take the lead. The first of two scores came from outside the 22 metre, ill discipline from BBOB gave Saints advantage for scrum half Rory Dingemans picked out Prop Johnny Berwick running through the middle of the defence line scoring under the posts. Score now 14-14 after the extras were added from Lewis Hall.

The second came from returning player Oliver Frestle. Saints demonstrated their worth with relentless work to build pressure in the BBOB half, culminating in Frestle's score after some well organised phases. Saints took the lead 19-17.

The remaining 10 minutes became a game of fine margins and frustrations for the home side who opted to control the field with the boot, but BBOB were relentless to score. Saints appeared to hold out in the remaining minutes but again lacked focus, conceding a penalty on their 10m line and had to swallow up the final score going to BBOB. 19-20 final score.

Saints Head Coach Johnny Berwick commented "The boys' work rate and efforts can't be faulted today, credit goes to us for taking the lead but we made some areas harder than it should have been. We'll take the bonus point and a lot of positives going away to Oakham next week who will be looking to prove their worth too."
