After league opponents Shelford cried off on Friday, Heathens were awarded a walk over win and hastily arranged a fixture entertaining St Ives on the Common, in what was always going to be a competitive local derby.
Through a series of strong carries St Ives secured first blood with a try, followed by a second try, this time converted after the St Ives full back broke the Heathens defence at pace.
After this Heathens started to gel & by avoiding the line out & concentrating on their strengths were able to win a series of penalties as St Ives infringed. This culminated in a tap quickly taken penalty following quick thinking from Dan Hill & Peter Arnold* (*the only quick thing nowadays), where Arnold carried through the realigning Ives defence before Hill recycled & scampered over to score.
At half time Heathens regrouped, utilising their bench with Jim Cooper & Barnaby Dingemans particularly effective, and were soon pressurising the St Ives line again. This finally culminating in a try for Reece Gratton out wide to bring the score to 10-12.
The remaining minutes were closely fought, saints losing Dan Court after he tried to remove a finger, before the game was called off early following a head injury to a St Ives player.
