St Neots Give Bedford the Blues

Saints played their first juniors match in squally conditions on Sunday, but despite the rain played some enterprising rugby to sweep to a 40-10 win. Tries from S Jackson, O’Leary (2), Woodgate (2), Chapman and Whitfield saw a dominant St Neots stretch to a deserved 35-0 lead by half-time. As conditions deteriorated, the second half became more attritional but St Neots defended bravely against a resurgent Blues, before adding a final try from Green to cap off a fine team performance.

Highlights of the game were the strong scrummaging and breakdown work by the forwards, and incisive running and intelligent passing from the backs. Parsons, Swallow, Moretto and Archer worked tirelessly in the pack, but stand out player was Willmott who was named man of the match for a mature and controlling performance at fly-half.

Not to be out-done, the tackle of the day came from Mike Bonnick who sprinted 50 yards in chase of the team tent before wrestling it to the ground in the wind. A fine example for the players who didn’t miss a tackle all day!
