Saints continue their climb up the league table

St Neots Saints continued their climb up the league table with another win at home on the common, against local rivals Biggleswade.

Despite a nervous start which saw St Neots give away an interception try and a number of penalties which allowed Biggleswade to rack up an early 10 points, Saints rallied together after 20 minutes to reduce the errors and start playing with confidence in their structures.

Using their strong runners, Johhny Berwick, Rhod Howcroft and Jordan Rook, Saints crossed the gain-line on multiple phases, marching their way towards the Biggleswade line. With the Biggleswade defence going backwards and concentrating on the direct running of the forwards, scrum-half Grant Hobbs then went wide and quick hands by backs Stuart Whitelaw and Callum Austen combined to release flanker Matt Cartwright out wide to score in the corner.

Saints allowed Biggleswade to extend their lead conceding another penalty, but from the resulting kick-off, flanker Aiden Jordan rose above the Biggleswade forwards to secure the ball before beating the stationary defenders and with just the full-back to beat he drew the last defender before passing inside to Rory Dingemans in close support and the strong running winger raced in to score and put Saints into a deserved lead going into the break.

Half Time Saints lead 15 - 13

A half-time talk seemed to galvanise the Saints team and they came out even stronger. A telling break by Jordan Rook saw the big No. 8 run at the Biggleswade defence, shrug off a couple of tackles before throwing a dummy pass that saw him gallop into open field where an off-load to Dingemans saw Saints playing deep in Biggleswade territory.

The forwards lead by second row partnership of Ross Hubbard and Nick Ashford then used their power to edge towards the Biggleswade posts and with their defenders drawn infield, Saints again quickly went wide. Lewis Hall passed out to Austen who found Dingemans whose quick hands found Cartwright and with Hall looping round the overlap was complete and Hall went over in the corner to score a very well worked team try.

As expected Biggleswade came back hard, but some very strong defending by the Saints team held firm and some big tackles by Dingemans, Howcroft, Ashford and Whitelaw often saw the Biggleswade runners driven backwards.

While weathering the Biggleswade pressure, Saints eventually won a penalty in their own half. A quick tap saw skipper Ross Hubbard tear through the retreating defenders before off-loading to Hobbs who carried to the Biggleswade 22 before drawing the full-back and passing inside to hooker Phil Sandling in support, who ran in to score under the posts for the well earned bonus point try.

Saints allowed Biggleswade a last minute score but the game was already won.
Lewis Hall added one Penalty and one conversion.

Final Score Saints 25 – Biggleswade 18.
