St. Neots took the long journey over to Midlands side Melton Mowbray despite having many players out with injury or on HIA rest. The game started well for both teams with Melton putting Saints under pressure which they absorbed well and allowed only 3 points for the oppositions graft. Saints then found themselves retaliating with big carries and high tempo. They pushed into the Melton Mowbray 22 and looked for the opening try of the game. Saints were unlucky not to score after coming close several times and a handling error allowed Melton Mowbray to clear their lines. The home team began to take control using their large forwards to punch holes in the St Neots defence. After Saints were punished for their mistakes, Melton Mowbray went into the half up by 3 tries.
In the second half Melton Mowbray were keen to continue their momentum. With strong moves from set play they were able to manipulate the Saints defence and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Saints were keen to ensure they left with heads held high and big carries from forwards Howcroft, Hubbard and Routley saw them drive through opposition defenders. A whole team effort grinding up the field resulted in a try for Routley in the dying minutes of the game. Those who stepped up to play and represent the club in the circumstances can be proud of themselves and their efforts.
Saints look forward to meeting BBOBs next week at home.
