This week, St Neots made the short trip to local rivals Huntingdon. The match was set to be a closely fought competition, with both sides looking to make a statement in the league. Saints kicked off and piled on the pressure in the Stags' 22 from the start. Big carries from Ross Hubbard and Rhod Howcroft pushed Saints closer to the Huntingdon line, but strong counter-rucking enabled Stags to turn over the ball and kick it deep, relieving some of the pressure on their defence.
The Saints soaked up Huntingdon's short spell of attack, forcing them to knock the ball on. The St Neots pack was powerful and won their own ball, allowing fly half Rory Dingemans to send the ball back into the Stag's half. The wall of blue shirts chased the kick and won the ball back through a penalty which was slotted by Dingermans.
0 - 3 St Neots
From the restart Saints were keen to continue testing Huntingdon, who equally were looking to get their own points on the board. They came close after a Stags line break showed promise, but a flying covering tackle from scrum half Jack Webb put a stop to that and hard work from St Neots defence won back possession. Saints kept their heads and the ball to push deep into the Huntingdon half and Luke Nolan's line outs gave a great platform for the back line to play off of.
Forward carries from Chris Routley and Ryan Burke pushed the Saints closer to the line with much better protection around the breakdown to keep the ball secure. This allowed Dingemans to sell a dummy to his opposite man and battle through covering tackles to score under the posts and convert his own try.
0 - 10 Saints
With around 10 minutes to go until half time Huntingdon tried to force their way back into the game. Kicking into space to push themselves up the pitch. James Larman was a safe pair of hands at fullback and guided his wingers into several intelligent kick returns. It was at this point that the ref called both captains over and gave them the unfortunate news that he had injured himself. After consulting the sideline in hopes of finding a qualified alternative, the decision was made to abandon the game.
Saints left frustrated after such a strong first half performance, but with plenty of positives to take into the next game against Luton Town at home on 17th September.
