Thriller Ends in a Stalemate: Saints Battle to a Dramatic 30-30 Draw

Kieran Rook15 Oct 2024 - 09:04

In a rollercoaster of a match, Saints showcased resilience, skill, and nail-biting moments, leaving fans on the edge of their seats!

The game started off rather chaotically with Dunstablians unlucky not to score within the first minute after a forward pass, this kicked St Neots back into action and after clearing the ball from their own try line, Matthew Peppler Jones made a brilliant read of Dunstablians lineout play intercepting a pass and running in a score from his own 10 meter line. Conversion by Lewis Hall the score 7-0.

Dunstablians soon replied with a similar try of their own, collecting a fumbled Saints ball, spreading the ball wide and dotting the ball down in the corner. The score was now 7-5.

After a penalty from Lewis Hall bringing the score to 10-5, Dunstablians scored another try against the run of play with number 13 intercepting a pass, scoring under the post. After the conversion Dunstablians led 12- 10, they cemented their lead not long after with another try after a well put together move and strong carries.

With another Lewis Hall penalty, the score was 19-13.

The second half saw both teams settle into the game, both showed great defence and good, hard running. Dunstablians took the first points in the second half, managing to convert another penalty. However, St Neots scored the first try of the second half. A quick tap penalty in the oppositions 22 and some slick hands set a ruck up in the left-hand corner. Jack Webb bounced off the ruck pulling defenders into him, allowing him to pop the ball to Rory Dingemans, who slid over the line to score. 18-22

Dunstablians were next to score having elected to take the scrum off a penalty - much to their coaches disbelief. Off the scrum they carried the ball hard into the centre of the field and swung back round to the right, with the fullback scoring in the corner. The try was celebrated with a very athletic backflip from their prop. Score 18-27.

Saints knew they had to fight back quickly to stay in the game, their next try saw lovely play from scrum half Jack Webb who picked from the ruck holding the ball until the opposition defenders couldn’t resist biting in on him. When they did, he popped the ball to Billy Woodgate on a great line who had an easy run in under the posts.
A Conversion by Lewis hall left the scores at 25-27.

In the last 10 minutes Dunstablians kicked over a penalty taking them five points clear and looked as though they had sealed the win. With only seconds on the clock, the ever eager Jack Webb took a quick tap penalty passing the ball to Rory Dingemans, who put on some particularly average footwork, offloading the ball to Dean Terreblanche who put the ball down with such force the referee had no choice but to award a try in the corner. This left Lewis Hall with a kick right on the touch line, Lewis’ kick looked to be sailing over but unfortunately it wasn’t to be and the game ended 30-30
