St Neots RUFC 2nd XV - Heathens Match Report

After their resounding success last week Heathens faced a much stiffer challenge when they travelled to Red Lodge.

The game got off to a controversial start when the Mildenhall No 8 received a red card for a horrific tackle which also saw Heathens losing their influential fly-half Scott Barclay due to injury.

Mildenhall lent the Heathens a player to ensure we still had 15 on the pitch and a scrappy game ensued. Both teams carried the ball strongly with Heathens showing great pace and ambition moving the ball wide through the backs at every opportunity.

Through a series of strong carries Mildenhall played to their strengths and secured the first try, quickly followed by another bruising run resulting in a second try.

After this Heathens started to gel with returning player Ben Arnold linking with Josh Lofty to produce some great carries that put Heathens back on the front foot. Some quick ball through the hands of new players Phil Spire and Patrick Muldoon led to a great try being scored in the corner by the borrowed Mildenhall player.

At half time Heathens regrouped and were soon pressurising the Mildenhall line again though after losing influential back row player Toby Hill to injury it became a hard task.

The game was closely fought right until the last whistle and despite a number of yellow cards to the opposition Heathens couldn’t find that killer blow, the game finishing 34 – 17 to Mildenhall.

Heathens will look to get back to winning ways this coming weekend as they take on Sawston at The Common, 3pm KO.
