VETS VS OUDLE

With the 1st XV game being called off, it was the Vets turn to take centre stage against friendly rivals Oundle Vets. with the smell of deep heat and about 3 miles of tape on show Saints lost the toss and were given the duty to kick off in front of a good number of supporters. The old boys ambled into the game and the organised Oundle team set the tone for the game by carrying strongly and recycling the ball well. The old boys (still waiting for their medication to kick in) struggled to deal with Oundle's organised back line and they went over for the games first try.
With medication and deep heat now starting to take effect Saints came into the game, good line breaks in the midfield from Tommy McCollin set some good platform for the dynamic back row of Pete Arnold, Phil Fernie and Paul Warmington (finally out of his bubble wrap) to make good yards but time and again the final pass went begging. A couple of tries here and there for both teams were scored but with the rain coming down sideways it was hard for the aged eyes on the pitch to see who scored what. Saints did score in the final few moments to make the score 19-26 with the kick off to come. Alas the fairy tale finish was not to be and the game finished 19-26 to Oundle, much to the dismay of captain Pete Arnold who's brother and nephew were on the pitch for Oundle. Lots of good points for the Vets to take forward into the next game, one of which being the return of Lee Cook a former St Neots Junior player who is seeking redemption for being a godless heathen who has turned out for Cambourne in the past, but today his solid defence and good decision making from fullback earned him the plaudits as Man Of The Match. Onwards and upwards for the coffin dodgers and bring on the next game.
