Huntingdon Stags V St Neots U13

This was the lads first taste of junior rugby and it was great to see them pumped up ready in the changing rooms ahead of the game.
Todays captain gave a good talk to the team and everyone was ready and looking forward for what was to come.

Huntingdon had large numbers which already put our 14 players available today at a deficit playing on such a large pitch for the first time but the lads took this in their stride and didn’t let it bother them.

Huntingdon started strong and put in a couple of very fast tries running straight through the St Neots pack. It was evident that the boys were nervous and more Huntingdon tries soon followed as we missed tackles and lacked confidence in carrying the ball into contact.

Huntingdon's ruck speed was very fast which made it hard for St Neots to turn the ball over but when pressure was applied they forced them to make mistakes resulting in our scrums.

As we went into half time the boys heads had dropped slightly but after a good team talk by the captain and coaches they were ready to bounce back.

Huntingdon's confidence was high following their great first half performance but finally the St Neots lads started to find their confidence. Although we still had tries being scored against us the boys now had the confidence to take the ball into contact and drive players over the ball slowly making ground up the field.

Some very good rucks and pod work by the forwards then created our best chance of the game as the backs spotted the space on the left and got the ball out wide. Unfortunately Huntingdon managed to cover off the run and made a great tackle 10m out.

This made St Neots hungry and really boosted the teams confidence. Several players got knocks but showed awesome team spirit and after a brief recovery they wanted to get back to it.

Unfortunately after such great effort St Neots didn’t manage to get on the score board today but all the coaches were proud of the way the lads regained there confidence as the game went on and kept their heads high to have a strong finish to the game.

This was also mentioned by the Huntingdon coaches after the game. A great compliment to receive. Well done boys.

Overall a great finish to the game against a very strong well drilled Huntingdon side. St Neots will learn a lot from todays game as we head into a home fixture next weekend.

We wish Huntingdon all the best for the season ahead.
