St Neots U13s rounded off their regular season with a draw away at Biggleswade, a match that offered much to reflect on in both halves.
The setting lent the afternoon a proper match-day feel. Biggleswade's first team pitch, complete with raised spectator banking, provided a step up in surroundings, and on hard ground underfoot the Saints rose to the occasion in the opening half. The backs moved the ball with composure and precision, their interplay repeatedly creating opportunities through the Biggleswade defence, while the forwards contributed powerfully in the carry, giving the team real go-forward throughout the first period. A dominant set piece underpinned it all, and St Neots went in at the break with a commanding lead.
The second half presented a sterner examination. Playing uphill, St Neots found Biggleswade sharper at the breakdown and quicker in the ruck, and the hosts used that tempo to good effect, outflanking a narrow Saints defensive line on a number of occasions to eat into the lead. St Neots were unable to control the ball as they had before the break, and the match finished level.
Individual recognition on the day went to Rhys, who produced an assured display in his first outing at fly-half, and to Teddy, whose tackling throughout was a consistent highlight. Kian received the opposition's nomination for player of the match, a fine acknowledgement from the Biggleswade coaches.
Head coach Ian Wallis said "There was a lot to be pleased with today, The first half showed what this group is capable of, good forward carrying, sharp back play and a set piece that gave us real control. The second half was more difficult, but drawing away from home at this stage of the season is a solid result.”
