St Neots vs Peterborough

Sunday morning saw St Neots take on Peterborough in the first round of the Cambridge Cup.

The weather conditions were perfect for a fast, expansive game of rugby and neither team disappointed on this front.
St Neots were very quick into their stride and some excellent passing and off-loading in contact saw them take the lead with a try from their winger, Oscar McFadyen. He then successfully kicked the conversation.

Peterborough played some good rugby themselves, and scrummaged well throughout the match, however they suffered from a lack of possession and territory in the first half. St Neots identified the space in the wider channels very well and scored three very quick tries in succession from Oscar McFadyen (two more tries) and open-side flanker, Josh Loughnane. Oscar again impressed with the boot, adding two further conversions.

Peterborough responded well, however centre Benjamin Kennedy, managed to score a very clever intercept just before half-time, which was also converted. This brought the score to 33 - 0.

The second half saw a very strong come back from Peterborough. They played with a much greater intensity and began to really test the St Neots defence, shutting down the 10 channel well to stop St Neots distribution. On several occasions, their left winger was played into space and got very close to the line but St Neots showed some excellent defence to keep them out.

Despite some excellent line-breaks from St Neots through the mid-field, Peterborough were up to the challenge and managed to fix the problems that they experienced in the first half. A period of continued pressure from Peterborough finally saw them score with a well worked try from their forwards. A further two points were added from a conversion.

No further scores ensued although a strong effort from St Neots second row James Love was deemed to be held up in the final play of the game. All spectators agreed that this was an excellent match, played in a very good spirit.

Final score St Neots 33 Peterborough 7.

St Neots Man of the Match was Benjamin Kennedy for one of his best performances in a St Neots shirt.
